Texas Dem James Talarico defends ‘God’s sausage’ comment, outlines Senate campaign strategy

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico recalled the “provocative” remarks he made about God earlier on Thursday on “”Trench” in his podcast, he later defended the comment both politically and theologically.
“I know I was being provocative with that comment,” Talarico said.
The Democratic Senate candidate acknowledged making the remark during a 2021 speech to the Texas legislature, where he rebuked Republican legislation focusing on youth sports and transgender children, saying “God is non-binary.”
“While it may be politically provocative, I don’t think it’s theologically controversial. Most Christians believe God is beyond gender,” Talarico said during the podcast. he said.

“In Christ there is neither male nor female,” he added, referring to the Apostle Paul. “So if you have a problem with what I say, take it up with the Apostle Paul, not with me.”
This exchange occurred during part of the interview hosted by host Tim Miller. Reference was made to “God’s sausage”.
“While extremists in the Texas legislature were trying to attack different kids, I did it on the floor of the house,” Talarico told Miller.
The comment comes as Talarico ramps up his U.S. Senate campaign in Texas following his primary victory over Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Talarico, 36, will try to become the first Democrat to win a Senate election in Texas in nearly four decades as he faces the winner of the Republican primary runoff between longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

During the podcast, Talarico also took aim at Paxton and Cornyn.
“And so Ken Paxton was impeached for using his public office to enrich his donors,” Talarico said. “And that’s exactly what John Cornyn is doing on the grandest scale.”
He later added: “I believe that neither John Cornyn nor Ken Paxton deserves the honor of representing this great state in the United States Senate.”

Talarico also defended eliminating the filibuster in the Senate during the interview and said he agreed with Cornyn’s stance.
“I think in order for us to truly govern this country, we need to eliminate banditry,” Talarico said. he said. “People … want to see the results of that vote.”
The offices of Paxton and Cornyn did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

While Miller expressed concerns about whether enthusiasm and turnout within the voting bloc could ultimately reshape the outcome of the race, Talarico was also pressed about how he plans to reach Black voters in the general election.
“I will work to earn the trust, respect and support of every Black Texan,” Talarico said.
He pointed to Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) as a model for his campaign.
“I am deeply inspired by the Rev. Raphael Warnock … he knows how to turn a red state around,” he said, adding that Texas Democrats plan to “follow the same playbook” to win statewide.
