Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slams Elon Musk’s Grok amid sexual imagery concerns

The Australian Prime Minister has criticized Elon Musk’s social media platform X for an artificial intelligence used by some people on the platform to produce non-consensual sexualized images.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Anthony Albanese said this use of artificial intelligence was disgusting and that the eSafety Commissioner was “looking into this matter”.
“I think it’s completely disgusting that this tool is being used to get people to use the image creation functionality through Grok,” he said.
“This is yet another example of social media’s lack of social responsibility. And Australians, and indeed global citizens, deserve better.”
X is officially known as Twitter, and its built-in AI service Grok came under criticism after users began posting images of people replaced by generative AI to take their clothes off on the social media platform.
On Friday, image creation and editing features were limited to paying subscribers only.

In a statement posted on X last week, the platform said it would “take action against illegal content on
“Anyone who encourages or uses Grok to create illegal content will be subject to the same consequences as if they had uploaded illegal content,” the company said.

On Friday, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said that although reports from users were small, there had been an increase in Grok being used to create sexualized or exploitative images over the past few weeks.
“X, Grok and a wide range of other services are also subject to systemic security obligations to detect and remove child sexual exploitation material and other illegal material as part of Australia’s world-leading industry codes and standards,” he said.
“eSafety has written to X seeking further information on the measures implemented to prevent misuse of Grok’s service and to comply with these obligations.”
