Thailand eyes referendum on Cambodia border demarcation

The Thai Prime Minister said that his government would propose a referendum on whether two agreements will be canceled on the limitation of the border with Cambodia as a part of the plan to handle a dispute with his neighbor.

Thailand and Cambodia have been withdrawn over the 817km land borders for decades of pristine points for decades.

In July, tensions turned into a five -day deadly conflict – the worst struggle between the two countries for more than a decade – at least 48 people killed at least 48 people and temporarily became temporarily from hundreds of thousands of places on both sides.

The two countries have been based on an agreement signed for years in 2000 and providing a framework on the joint survey and limitation of the terrain border.

Another agreement signed in 2001 provides a framework for cooperation and potential resource sharing in the sea areas demanded by both countries.

Both agreements entered the public opinion investigation in Thailand, but in the last decade, especially on July 28, after the latest clashes that resulted in a commissioned ceasefire in Malaysia.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters, “In order to prevent further conflict, the House of Representatives has already established a committee to examine the issue, the government policy will propose to referendum on this issue.” He said.

The authority added that the referendum will provide a clear task on the subject.

Panitan Wattanayagorn, a political scientist from the University of Chulalongkorn, said that the two agreements have been relatively successful in the past, but now it has become problematic for relations between the two countries.

“Their cancellation may not be a direct solution to the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia because it can create a gap.” He said.

“The government should clearly state what will replace them, which should be accepted by Cambodia.” He said.
