The ‘cheap and quaint’ seaside town named one of the best places to retire in UK | UK | News

A seaside town known for being affordable and quaint has been named among the best places to retire in the UK. Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex has the UK’s third longest pier, as well as arcades and a beautiful sandy beach.

The Telegraph recently named it one of Britain’s top five coastal retirement towns. The broadcaster said: “When it comes to deciding where to live in retirement, moving to the coast could be just the change you’re looking for. With a quieter, more relaxed lifestyle and stunning views, a coastal retreat could be a peaceful place to enjoy your retirement years.”

They added: “If you’re one of those people who have reached retirement age or are considering a move to the coast, one of your main questions may be which places are best for you. Whether you’re planning to fully retire or buying a second home for regular weekend breaks, finding a place that suits your preferences is an important part of your decision-making journey.”

according to TelegramThe average price of a semi-detached house in Walton-on-the-Naze is £267,514, while a terraced house sells for an average of £211,797. This is lower than the average selling price of a house in the UK, which was £368,019 as of February 2026.

The town and the wider area are home to many wide, sandy beaches lined with colorful beach huts. It is popular with swimmers, especially in the summer months.

At 2,610ft long, Walton Pier is the third longest pier in the UK. There is a large indoor entertainment complex with arcades, bowling alley and amusement park.

Walton-on-the-Naze is also a popular fishing area where fishermen can catch cod, sole and perch. It is considered a classic British seaside destination with plenty to offer visitors.

The Telegraph said: “There are several towns on the north-east coast of Essex, easily accessible from London and surrounded by beautiful ‘Constable Country’ greenery and beaches. Frinton and Brightlingsea are the best known, but Walton-on-the-Naze is relatively cheap, small and friendly, with quaint streets, tea shops and nearby museums.”

The town has also benefited from investments in recent years. The money has enabled the opening of new attractions such as escape rooms, virtual reality simulators and adventure golf.

Essex Sunshine Coast added: “Although it is officially the third longest pier in the UK at over half a mile long, Walton Pier is the longest pier leading into the open sea, making it ideal for sea fishing. Put your lines out to sea in the summer for Sea Bass, Garfish and Sole, and in the winter for Halibut and Cod.”
