The Trump administration has revoked tens of thousands of nonimmigrant visas since January, citing crime as the primary reason.
The State Department said Thursday that 80,000 visas have been canceled this year, more than double the number canceled last year.
More than 8,000 student visas were among those affected.

According to the State Department, the main reasons for these cancellations were assault, theft and drunk driving. These three crimes accounted for almost half of the visas canceled this year.
The agency said it obtained more than 16,000 visas for DUIs, more than 12,000 for assault and more than 8,000 for theft.
“Promises made, promises kept,” the State Department wrote on X, adding that President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio “will always put the security and interests of the American people first.”

The Department of State may revoke a visa for reasons such as indications of expiration, criminal activity, threat to public safety, engagement in any form of terrorist activity, or support for a terrorist organization.
The administration has defined support for terrorism broadly to include U.S. support for Israel and military action by the Jewish State, as well as support for the Palestinians. The federal government has previously used this as a justification for revoking visas.
Since Trump returned to the White House in January, his administration has been looking for online posts targeting foreigners in case their visas were potentially revoked.

On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order to ensure that visa holders “do not engage in hostile attitudes toward its citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles, and do not advocate, assist, or support designated foreign terrorists and other threats to our national security.”
In the summer, the State Department said it would begin asking applicants to make their social media accounts public for government monitoring, and that interviews with applicants would determine who might pose a threat to national security.
