The frozen in time UK village that looks exactly the same as 273 years ago | UK | News

A small village in England is surrounded by untouched natural beauty and appears as if frozen in time. Although exciting cities such as London and Edinburgh are always popular for short breaks in the UK, the real attraction lies in the UK’s small towns and villages. From seaside towns in the south of England to remote locations in rural Scotland, Britain boasts a wealth of picturesque villages, many of which will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time.

People praised the tiny village, home to just under 1,000 people, for its surrounding scenery, friendly locals and old-timey feel. The village is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, in the Bulbourne valley of the Chiltern Hills. This little village truly feels like it’s frozen in time, and the local boozer has been in business for over 200 years.

The village’s official website says the fields around it have remained virtually untouched, while the village itself has remained largely unchanged over the generations.

Local pub The Valiant Trooper first opened in 1752 and after a brief closure was refurbished to become a more modern country pub.

Meanwhile, the village’s original stocks and whipping post date back to the late Middle Ages. They were once used for punishment and humiliation of the public but can now be visited by locals and tourists in the area.

There are many options in and around Aldbury for those visiting the area and exploring The Chilterns. Visitors enjoy heading to Aldbury Stocks, described by TripAdvisor reviewers as a fine example of medieval history in Britain.

There is also Ivinghoe Beacon, a walking trail that people call beautiful, with stunning countryside views. “The views are spectacular as you pass through Ashridge Manor, especially from Beacon,” one review said.

Aldbury is also close to greater Tring, home to Tring Natural History Museum, Tring Park and Ashridge Estate.

When a Reddit user asked for some hidden towns and villages to visit in the UK, one person immediately brought up Aldbury. They wrote: “Near Aldbury, Tring, Herts. You will always remember it being used as a typical rural village scene in films and television.”

As well as The Valiant Trooper, you’ll find The Greyhound, another superb country pub in Aldbury that’s perfect for a post-walk beer and meal. British classics are served, which will feel like a great reward after exploring the countryside all day.
