ABC to discontinue Q+A after panel show’s 18 years on air
ABC announced the weekly panel show as part of a series of changes that will stop 18 years later, and the public broadcaster will result in a series of approximately 40 surplus.
Patricia Karves’ın hosted since 2023, the show will not return after the break that began last month.
ABC’s news director Justin Stevens, Q+A has made a great contribution to the national public debate, he said.
“We are proud of the great achievements of Q+A for years. The team has done a great job, including a strong performance during the Federal Election Campaign.” He said.
“At this point, stop the program is not a reflection to anyone in the show.
“We should always continue to innovate and renew, and the world has changed in twenty years since Q+A has begun.
“It is time to rethink how the audience wanted to interact and to improve how we can interact with the public to include as many Australians as possible in national conversations.
He said: “We will work on how we can continue to improve the participation of this nature in an innovative way.”
In the afternoon of Karveas, the briefing and the popular policy will now host Podcast and write the column for the ABC News website.
“Patricia has recently reported for four corners, and now we wanted it to do more for four corners, as it allows time.” He said.
Stevens told ABC personnel in an E -mail, Q+A, said that the offer would result in some excess.
ABC also announced that it will invest in producing more news documentaries with a new producer to be advertised soon.
In addition, it will also make the project initiated in the last federal elections – a permanent initiative to ensure the participation of the masses throughout the country.
“Your word allows us to have a strong framework to put the views, concerns and questions of the people who have completed our daily assignments and reports to the center of our journalism.” Stevens. He said. “We want to see what else we can do with this.”
Structural change
In a later announcement, ABC General Manager Hugh Marks announced more changes with approximately 40 surplus and about 10 fixed contract.
The publisher’s content section will be the ABC screen, led by director Jennifer Collins. The proposal includes a new digital content department that will “make digital and social content directly with our screen species and our commissioning process”.
“We will re -invest in the Premium Australian screen content that will strengthen our primary digital platforms and strengthen ABC Listen.”
Marks said that changes were also proposed for the sound section and dividing sports and capital network sets into a simpler structure.
“We want to be brave with our content ambitions and try to earn in a creative way,” he said.
“We need to invest in investing and present more to our audience. And we need the capacity of new formats for news, display and sound.
“Successing this means to make strategic and sometimes difficult choices about where to step back from areas where we invest and are no longer compatible with our priorities.
“Losing his colleagues is always difficult and is not a reflection on the performance of people. I want to accept the great contribution made by many talented people.” He said.
Journalism working with the audience
In 2008, the Q+A, which was initiated by the founding producer Peter Mcevoy and the host Tony Jones, was a program of an agenda that pushed politicians beyond the standard speech points.
At that time, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd appeared in the first part before introducing the regular format of five panelists, including politicians from all over the spectrum and others in public life.
What emphasized him from other panel shows was the role of the audience who directed questioning in the studio or through video and social media.
In 2019, Mcevoy said the audience was the biggest challenge and power of the show.
“An ordinary panel program has to force only four or five guests,” he said.
“Question -Evap 300, 400 has to manage – up to thousands of audience participants – recruitment, registering, checking identities, informing them, producing questions and selecting.”
By asking the audience questions, the speech can go in unexpected directions and give a platform to people who are not heard in other areas of public life.
However, not every question took the speech forward, he won Jones’ signature line, “I will get this as a comment”.
When Jones left the show in 2019, Hamish Macdonald joined the host for 18 months before he resigned. Grant took the role of solo before he took the role of his homeowners David Speers, Virginia Trioli and Stan Grant.
In May 2023, Grant resigned from the program after constantly racist abuse and troll on his last show: “I can only say to those who abuse me and my family – if your goal was to harm me, you’ve been successful.”
Patricia Karves has hosted Q+A for the last two years.
Tribute to Q+A staff, panelists
During the 18 -year run of the show, Stevens gave tribute to many people working on the screen and behind the camera.
“I want to call the current chief producer Eliza Harvey and presenter Patricia Karves. In recent years, very talented journalists who have done an extraordinary job with Q+A.” He said.
“Many highly talented and dedicated people worked as a presentation on Q+A and behind the scenes.
He continued: “I am expanding our sincere thanks to all of them and everyone who contributed as audience members and panelists.”
Karveas said he enjoyed being a part of the program.
“Spending time with the members of the audience who came to Q+on Monday night was the best part of this.” He said.
“They have always been the cause of this show and I am grateful for coming to national TV and having the courage to ask the questions of strong people.”
