The iconic tree that stands right in the path of the light rail | The Canberra Times

Last week: Congratulations to Spence’s Roger Shelton, who was the first reader to correctly identify last week’s photo as the stand at Wright Park on Old Sydney Road in Queanbeyan East. George Burke reports: “When we first came to Queenbeyan in 1964 it was a rubbish dump and later when Wright Oval was built on the site the council had to keep compacting and upgrading it for years as the rubbish steadily diminished and the sharp metal from the rusting, rotting car bodies buried at the end was exposed.” Damn, you don’t want to be messed with. Let alone diving for the ball in the outfield to save a boundary. “In retrospect, car bodies should have been crushed and recycled,” adds George. Fortunately, the problem has been resolved long ago.
