More human remains, jacket found in search for tourist

More human remains were found, as well as clothing items believed to belong to a Belgian tourist who disappeared more than two years ago.

Police searched part of the Arthur River near Waratah on Tasmania’s west coast on Friday after a bushwalker found the bones earlier this week.

This section is approximately 2 km from Philosopher Falls near Cradle Mountain, the last place Celine Cremer visited on June 17, 2023.

After the 31-year-old was reported missing by his family on June 26, a major search was launched involving police and SES ground teams, specialist swift water rescue personnel, drones and a helicopter.

Ms Cremer was believed to have gone for a walk and her car was found in the falls car park a day after the missing person report was filed.

Commander Nathan Johnston confirmed a fleece jacket, possibly belonging to Ms Cremer, was also found by officers on Friday.

He said more bones were found, as well as a bra and thermal top.

“Although further forensic examination is required to confirm the identity, due to the nature and location of the items found, we believe they belong to Celine,” Mr Johnston told reporters. he said.

It comes after a bushwalker taking part in a renewed private search for Ms Cremer found human remains on Wednesday.

Police said the remains, including the jawbone, were being handled as a separate investigation because their identity had not yet been confirmed.

The group discovered Ms. Cremer’s phone in December 2025.

Testing is likely to take several weeks before the coroner can confirm the identity.

The bones will be examined by a pathologist, anthropologist and dentist and subjected to DNA testing at the Tasmanian Forensic Science Services.

“We recognize how important these developments are to Celine’s family and are ensuring they receive updates as sensitively and quickly as possible,” Mr Johnston said.

Search teams will work until Friday night and return to the area on Saturday.
