In 2015, Selba-Gondoza Luke Oam founded Afri-Auss Care, a Melbourne-based community organization dedicated to breaking the taboos and stigmatization around mental health, especially in African and cultural and linguistic communities.
In 1998, Luka emigrated from his daughter Kwacha to Australia from Malawi.
While studying a master’s degree in nursing and then clinical mental health, he was subjected to the loss of another child, led to postpartum depression and experienced violence.
When his experience was combined with what he saw in hospitals and prisons, he inspired him to start Afri-Oust care.
“There was only a young or African human pattern taken to hospital or in prison because of the difficulties we found in this beautiful country we call home now.”

Vol The voluntary start of the organization helped me to recover because I could understand that even other people who saw the worst could raise each other, or he says.
Luka says Afrı-Os Care operates according to Ubuntu, an African thought tradition that gives priority to society and empathy.
“So, to see yourself in another person. Healing sees other people: we speak and support each other and we can not do, we direct people to health service providers.”
“Volunteering is the way to alleviate problems and also creates character and trust, Luka says Luka.

Most of his work involves exposing to many difficulties faced by young people today, as well as fueling the sense of optimism.
“Today, young people wander in an incredibly complex world between mental health crisis, housing insecurity, climate anxiety and increasing social pressures.
“Strangely in these areas, volunteering made me more hopeful. I saw how deeply young people attach importance to, and I saw that they were willing to do a lot to lead each other even when they were tired, and I continued to talk about things that the past generations might be silent.”
