The massive rule change that could save you pain at the airport when flying with Jetstar

Jetstar is rolling out a major overhaul to its carry-on luggage rules, as passengers will continue to be weighed up to $110 at the boarding gate under its strict policy.

The budget airline allows 7kg of hand luggage on basic fares; It’s split between a larger item for the overhead bin and a smaller item under the seat.

Passengers will be able to pre-purchase an extra 7 kg for $60 on domestic flights and $85 on international flights.

However, those caught at the door overweight are hit harder; A hefty penalty of $85 for domestic flights and $110 for international flights.

Jetstar’s head of network and fleet, Ted Knight, admitted the policy was a “pain point” for travellers.

“Sometimes you walk towards the door and you get that kind of door anxiety and you’re not sure if you’ve weighed your bag correctly,” she said.

Mr Knight said the airline was reviewing its cabin baggage rules in a bid to “reduce pain points” and provide a smoother experience.

Jetstar is examining US airline models where domestic carry is restricted by size rather than weight; This is a move that would be a first for an Australian carrier.

“We are currently looking at different size options based on weight,” Mr Knight said.

Any changes need to take into account the aircraft’s weight and stability limits.

Airplanes have a strict maximum takeoff weight that includes fuel, crew, passengers, food supplies and baggage, and improper loading can cause serious flight control problems.
