The ‘new Hollywood face’: Expert reveals why stars such as Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow all suddenly look the same

Awards season came to a close last night, with the Oscars delivering drama and glamor in equal measure.

But plastic surgeons and aesthetic experts said the 98th Academy Awards also marked the end of the old world-class beauty standards after Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow unveiled the ‘new Hollywood face’.

Anne, 43, looked radiant as she arrived at the Oscars in a Valentino dress that made a tongue-in-cheek reference to The Devil Wears Prada’s famous “flowers for spring” dialogue.

Like Anne, Nicole, 58, looked effortlessly youthful as she struck a series of poses on the red carpet at the 98th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

Gwyneth, 53, opted for a very racy dress that caused a wardrobe malfunction but experts agreed the Goop founder hasn’t aged well after joining entertainment industry’s biggest stars for the Oscars last night.

Noting that they look strikingly similar, medical esthetician Dr. “All three have beautifully supported eye areas, naturally open, refreshed eyes and slightly raised eyebrows,” said Gizem Seymenoğlu.

According to Dr Julian De Silva, the key features of the ‘new Hollywood face’ include smooth skin, lifted cheeks and a chiseled jawline achieved through fine adjustments over a long period of time.

“Actresses such as Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow all exhibit these characteristics and create a polished, camera-ready look under high-definition lighting,” Dr De Silva said.

On the other hand, “overcorrection is no longer relevant”, as the Harley Street plastic surgeon warned that not all faces respond to tweaks in the same way.

‘The aim is a relaxed, youthful upper face rather than a frozen look,’ said Dr De Silva, as seen on Anne and Nicole.

He explained that carefully administered doses of Botox can smooth out wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows.

Another important factor is skin quality; Celebrities like Anne, Nicole, and Gwyneth have likely opted for treatments that stimulate collagen production, including laser resurfacing, microneedling, or radiofrequency technologies.

He added that fuller, lifted cheeks and a sharp jawline are the defining features of this aesthetic.

Carefully placed dermal fillers or fat transfer can restore this support and maintain youthful natural contours without creating the overly plump appearance that was more common in the past.

Additionally, a sharp jawline can be achieved with skin-tightening treatments or surgical procedures such as mini-lifts or deep-plane facelifts that reposition the deeper structures of the face rather than tightening the skin.

Finally, Anne and Gwyneth appear to have ‘very little hollowness or loose skin under their eyes’, making them look younger than their age.

Dr De Silva said treatments such as lower eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty, or tear fillers can be applied for this ‘renewed’ look.

Dr Seymenoğlu added: ‘The central part of the face is well supported, from the under-eye area to the cheekbones and upper cheeks.

‘The cheeks and under eyes align perfectly with the rest of the face, creating a harmonious look.

‘While there may be subtle enhancements such as dermal fillers or a liquid facelift, the overall effect is natural.’

Herein lies the secret of the ‘New Hollywood face’.

According to the expert, celebrities are now increasingly opting for subtle enhancements that ‘maintain facial harmony while softening lines and supporting mid-face contours’.

Dr De Silva agrees: ‘Most celebrities these days don’t want dramatic cosmetic changes.

‘What they usually want is a ‘camera-ready’ face that still looks natural in close-up.

‘The emphasis is on subtle care rather than transformation, preserving facial structure while preventing obvious signs of aging.’

But Dr De Silva warned there are a few important things to consider before making your next appointment.

He said the red carpet appearances also show how differently faces respond to aesthetic treatments, suggesting that treatments that ignore the proportions of the face can create a heavier or less natural appearance.

‘When volume, skin quality and facial structure are carefully balanced, the result tends to look refreshed and harmonious on camera,’ said Dr De Silva.

‘Too much filler in the cheeks or mid-face can create a disproportionate appearance, and insufficient support of the mid-face can cause the face to appear flatter or more tired in strong light.’

Dr Seymenoğlu stated that Heidi Klum’s face looks fuller and less structured, while celebrities such as Isla Fisher ‘prefer a natural approach’.

“The area between her forehead and eyebrows shows natural horizontal lines, and the area around her eyes, mouth, or lower face may not have received treatment,” the medical esthetician added.

‘Heidi and Isla maintain a natural, minimally manipulated look, while those with enhanced mid-face support, such as Anne, Nicole and Gwyneth, often look more lifted and balanced, especially around the eyes and upper cheeks.’
