The OmniBus Crash of the Hate Speech Laws | The West Report
Alongside gun reforms, the Albanian government is trying to introduce a new set of libel laws brought together in an “omnibus” bill, and it’s already booming before Parliament restarts.
Labor calls it the Countering Antisemitism, Hatred and Extremism Bill 2026, but that title alone tells you what’s going on; One form of racism has special priority right there at the top.
The Liberals and Greens refuse to support this, and for good reason. The bill lowers the legal threshold from speech that incites violence to speech that merely “promotes hatred” and gives great power to a highly subjective “reasonable person” test. Not a law anchored in harm, but a law anchored in vibrations.
