Local health departments moved quickly to contain the virus. While the school campus was thoroughly disinfected, the following precautions were taken by the health directorate:
Health Tracking: Regular attendance monitoring and symptom control of all students.
Epidemiological Research
There is an ongoing investigation to determine the true origin of the infection.
Observation: Affected students are monitored closely for signs of dehydration and/or worsening of symptoms.
A Seasonal Threat in Guangdong
Guangdong Province has entered the peak period of norovirus outbreaks, according to provincial disease control departments. Norovirus outbreaks generally peak between October and March in Guangdong Province.
Noroviruses are highly contagious and are responsible for the largest number of cases of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Noroviruses are commonly known as “stomach flu”; However, since they target the intestinal tract rather than the respiratory tract, they have no relation to the flu virus.
Global Effects and Symptoms
Norovirus is known to spread extremely quickly among densely populated populations, such as those in schools and hospitals. Important points about the virus are:
Common Symptoms: Vomiting, Diarrhea and Abdominal Pain
Global Load: It is estimated that 685 million cases occur annually, mostly in low-income countries, resulting in 200,000 deaths.
Economic Cost: This results in a total annual average cost and loss of productivity for healthcare services worldwide of $60 billion.
This virus was discovered after an outbreak in Norwalk, Ohio, in 1968, and since its discovery, it has been considered the number one virus for causing cases of foodborne illness in many countries around the world, including the United States.
Expert Advice on Prevention
Health experts have noted that personal and home hygiene practices, such as hand washing, are generally less effective against norovirus than other germs because the virus is so resilient and easily transmitted.
