Hard luggage, soft sales: Why your parents’ favourite suitcase brand is falling behind

Samsonite first entered India in the mid-1990s, when luggage was almost synonymous with VIP Industries. Unlike rivals Safari and VIP, the flagship Samsonite brand focuses squarely on the premium, ‘global’ customer. But over the years, the company has launched sub-brands to cater to mass premium and bulk priced customers as well. In 2015, it launched value segment brand Kamiliant while scaling up American Tourister, a mid-priced offering for younger and design-conscious customers. Samsonite South Asia Pvt. Ltd is yet to file its latest financial reports for 2024-25. But its revenue fell 16% year-on-year 1,942 crore in calendar year 2025, according to the company, while profits fell by two-thirds to just below that. 73 crore. Samsonite South Asia follows the calendar year in financial terms.
