These New Castle County first responders acted quickly. It likely saved this boy’s life

Trey Harrison’s injuries were critical.

On the evening of March 30, his mother Kia Optima flew to the route 273 media in Christiana and hit a new Castle County police vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The effect caused Kia to be divided into two.

Recently, District Police Officer Drew Johnson was trapped in the patrol car, which was significantly damaged. When he started to fill with smoke, a second district officer close to the scene came to the accident area.

On August 21, 2025, after 30 March 2025 at the Nemours Children’s Hospital, about five months later, a car accident, which was critically injured, met with 10 -year -old Trey Harrison new Castle County police officers and other first interventionists who saved that night life.

Despite the rapid actions of the officers and the medical helicopter Johnson and Merrill, the medical helicopter of the New Castle County medical officials and Delaware State Police, he was not sure that Trey would survive.

Nevertheless, about five months after the debris, on August 21, the child reunited with two civil servants and many other first intervention teams who helped to save his life that day. Next week will be released from Nemours Children’s Hospital.

Johnson and Merrill know Trey’s life will change forever that evening. Theirs could be. But they are grateful for Trey is alive and that his actions make a difference.

“The best part of doing this job – when you have someone, when you have a positive result,” Johnson said. “Most of the time, you can’t get this positive result or we don’t know what’s happening, but that’s a few times one, and it cares about it.”

A chaotic scene

When Merrill heard that the tires were screaming and that there was a “loud effect ,, he completed the documents near the accident scene, then saw the debris fly in the air.

He ran to the sound of Johnson’s patrol. Amanda’s Kia said, “It was divided into two.”

Johnson radio that he had fallen into the trap and kidnapped Merrill. Once he was released, the two accepted Trey as the most important patient.

In addition to losing important blood, Trey’s leg was seriously damaged. Merrill, said it was shocked on August 21, doctors do not need to do amputation, he said.

Then, Johnson, Johnson – actually just a few minutes – the other first intervention teams arrived. Medical officials took action, took over Trey’s treatment and turned his attention to his mother and siblings.

Later, they ran to various hospitals where everyone was released later, except the tray. On August 21, Amanda said that the experience became even more difficult with the fact that injuries initially prevented them from visiting the Trey.

He said he was incredibly proud of his son.

Although he had undergone 37 surgeries since March evening, he managed to encourage other hospital patients and even become friends. This was a proof of his character and flexibility.

Amanda said, “It is surprising how much it progresses because I wouldn’t think just in such a short time, the more bad it was, the more bad it was,” he said. “But he’s incredible. I don’t even have to worry about him.”
