This South Carolina mom of 3 was left to run entire Burger King by herself for 12+ hours. Then BK responded

Columbia makes a Tiktok video tours in South Carolina, running single mother Nykia Hamilton on its own – something she says is often.

In a viral interview with local South Carolina Outlet Wach Fox 57, Hamilton claimed that he was left alone to run the restaurant where he works, buy order, make food, clean and driving without backing up. Shifts can sometimes take more than 12 hours, that was the case that day.

Hamilton said to Wach Fox, “I miss my children’s lives while working hard,” he said. “I have to provide them, but I don’t have time to spend with them – and that hurts me very much.”

Labor shortage that squeezed fast-food chains

As the labor market continued to shift after pandemik, restaurants, especially large fast-food chains, struggled to hire and hold workers. According to the US Office of Statistics, the accommodation and food services sector still has one of the highest quitting rates in the country.

Low wages, long hours and insufficient shifts are some of the reasons.

In the case of Hamilton, he says he should be late or take long shifts solo and forced him to choose between showing his job and appearing for his children.

Original Tiktok Many of them created a wave of sympathy and concern that draws attention to that insufficient fast-food chains have become very common: “Hurry by Blossom Buffet and by Starbucks in McDonald’s, such a person is afraid of Hell until 11 at night.”

Large chains such as Burger King and McDonald’s have made public commitments to improve the retention and compensation of the worker, but stories like Hamilton’s suggest that these promises cannot always reach the front. “One of my employees left me and had no other people to go in, so I had to work on my own and close myself,” he said.

Burger King in response to the situation, Wach Fox:

“In Burger King, it is our policy that all the company and the restaurants of franchisees require more than one team members per shift. We are working with the franchise owner of this position to understand what happened and take the necessary measures.”

What to do if you work under similar conditions

If you are an employee who is facing excessive inadequate or insecure expectations, a few steps you can take are:

  • Document everything: Keep a written diary or take photos of conditions.

  • Know your rights: OSHA laws protect workers from insecure working environments. You can make an anonymous complaint.

  • Talk to others: If colleagues face similar problems, consider talking together.

  • See workers’ resources: Local legal aid clinics, employment lawyers and even union representatives can help.

Employees asked them to cover multiple roles, burnout, health problems and family tension. They may also miss breaks or overtime protection or may be more afraid of talking about the fear of losing their jobs.

And for consumers? This type often occurs in more slow service, wrong orders and even temporary closure – not to mention the increasing menu prices as labor costs increase.

A loyal and determined worker

Hamilton says he is grateful for having a job, even though you have longed for long hours and your family.

“I wouldn’t have a job because I have a record and it is hard to find a job with a record. And he gave me a job with God’s grace. So that’s the only reason I stayed for him,” he said.

Hamilton finally says he gets support the next day – after another shift that runs everything on his own.

“I closed myself again last night. Finally I got help. It will stay until the age of 11 and 11.
