Bound by Constitution, couple enters wedded life

Sheetal and Jithin exchanged copies of the Constitution of India at their wedding in Palakkad on Thursday.

Nenmara Sub-Registrar Office in the district witnessed a unique celebration on New Year’s Day on Thursday when Sheetal and Jithin got married under the Special Marriage Act in a ceremony like no other.

The couple exchanged copies of the Indian Constitution instead of traditional rituals, making it a Constitutional wedding in every sense.

“We wanted our wedding to reflect the ideals of the Constitution and celebrate simplicity,” said Ms. Sheetal and Mr. Jithin after the ceremony, which was completely free of traditional formalities.

Only a few friends attended the sample wedding.

The couple signed a marriage vow inspired by the Preamble of the Constitution, turning their union into a celebration of constitutional values. They also shared the spirit of this event with those around them by distributing brochures emphasizing these principles.

While Mr. Jithin from Ayaloor in Palakkad works as a village assistant in Thenkurissi Village-1, Ms. Sheetal from Karunagappally in Kollam is a teacher at Kannadi Higher Secondary School.

Ms. Sheetal had previously worked as a Constitution educator in the Kollam district panchayat’s Citizen-2022 project, which declared Kollam as India’s first fully Constitution literate district. He is also an active member of the Constitutional Literacy Council, an organization dedicated to promoting constitutional literacy across the state.

“We wanted to ensure that constitutional values begin at home and within the family. We were inspired by other members of the Constitutional Literacy Council, who used their wedding celebration to promote the Constitution,” the couple said.

They said their decision to hold the wedding at the Sub-Registrar’s Office stemmed from a desire to inspire more people to embrace a simple, low-key celebration.

Naseem Khan, chairman of the Constitutional Literacy Council, who congratulated the newlyweds, said that the ceremony sent a broader message to society, that family relationships should be based on the moral and constitutional values enshrined in the Constitution. Mr. Khan along with executive member MA Raseena presented copies of the Constitution to the couple. The ceremony ended with the reading of the National Anthem, which was a nice development.
