Early life marked with struggle and survival
Shagufta was accepted and raised by a woman who was never officially recognized. After his death, his second family, including Shagufta, was left to defend for them. At the age of 11, he began to dance at private parties to support his mother who adopted Shaguf.
One night he would win around 700, and they usually had to survive only 500 a month. Thinking over those years, Al Jazeera told me: “Everything made me see how vulnerable women are and what money is respectable and what is not what is not.”
A vicious survival cycle
At the age of 17, he was the mistress of a rich man, a relationship he described as the lowest point of his life. In the quest for stability, despite emotional transitions, he remained for years. After free, Shaguf pushed himself into prostitution. Finally, he became a bar dancer to meet his endings.
Recalling this period, he shared with Al Jazeera, “This is a vicious cycle. I went to prostitution to get rid of my frustration for stuck, I started to work as a bar dancer, I went to Dubai to get away from Mumbai.”
Rejection in Bollywood
Despite his challenging conditions, Shagufa developed a passion for storytelling. But it was easy to break in Bollywood. Without an official training or experience, he moved away from various construction houses and TV shows.
“I would even go to construction houses, TV shows, and I would ask for a job as a writer, but nobody was interested because I had no experience,” he said.
