HopHop app | Children’s personal data has been compromised

The HopHop application, a service offered to parents in schools and daycares in Quebec, saw the personal data of its users compromised. Its servers are in the process of temporary suspension.
“A Radio-Canada article published on Tuesday, October 7 mentions that a computer security expert managed to access information contained in our database. We have initiated the procedure to temporarily suspend access to our servers and our application,” announced the HopHop application team.
Name, first name, photo, telephone number, but also first and last name of the children, photo of the child and name of the school attended… several personal information was compromised. The incident occurred between September 29 and this Tuesday, October 7.
HopHop management is holding discussions with the Ministry of Cybersecurity and Digital Affairs (MCN) “in order to correct the identified vulnerability”.
More than 500 schools and daycares in the province use the app, which is not approved by the government.
“Please be assured that we take this situation very seriously and are working tirelessly to address it. […] We will do everything possible to restore this security,” reads a statement from the application, which ensures that users will be informed of upcoming developments and measures on its website and by email in the coming days.
The HopHop application allows parents to notify their children’s establishment of their arrival time to facilitate departure from evening childcare.
