Thousands prepare to take part

Thousands of runners landed in Tyneside for Great North Run, one of the world’s largest half marathons.
The 44th stage of the race in Newcastle passes through Gateshead and South Tyneside before finishing at South Shields.
Approximately 60.00 runners entered and 13.1 miles (21 km) will be applauded by more than 200,000 supporters covering the route.
As it is traditional, there will be famous faces to see the runners on the starting line – this year there will be Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy and Nick Pope.
Among the participants will be Joe Wicks, one of the new beginners in Junior Great North Run, a publisher and fitness coach on Saturday.

Sir Brendan Foster, the founder of the Great North Run, said: “More popular, more famous, more demanded … The whole size of the thing is much larger.
“Interestingly, the age group is changing a little, more young people continue to run.
“8% of women running the first large northern run there, 49% of the runners last year were women.
“I am very happy to happen here in the North East, it has become iconic.”
