Three people have been arrested after a man was shot dead in a targeted attack on a high-rise building in Melbourne’s eastern suburb.
Residents reported hearing a loud explosion at the Box Hill apartment building on Whitehorse Road just before 2 a.m. Thursday.
Around the same time, a fire alarm triggered the evacuation of dozens of residents from the same building.
The 32-year-old man died at the scene.
Late on Thursday, police made arrests at Bonnie Brook in Melbourne’s northwest and the regional towns of Talbot and Maryborough.
Two 47-year-old men from Bonnie Brook and a 27-year-old woman from Maryborough will be interviewed about the incident.
Police say a man was shot early Thursday morning. A fight was reported to have broken out in an apartment on the 11th floor.
Firefighters and paramedics also attended. “At 1.32am, Fire Rescue Victoria responded to the incident on Whitehorse Road in Box Hill after a fire alarm was activated,” FRV said in a statement.
Residents told Nine News they heard a large explosion in the early hours of the morning. Jessica Rodarowe, who lives in the building, said the situation was scary.
“We had been out for about four hours. They didn’t tell us much, just that the worst had happened. I was asleep when the fire alarm went off,” he told Nine News.
Several more residents returned later Thursday morning to find crime scene tape outside the complex.
Some were nurses returning home from a night shift, others were teenagers staying at a friend’s house. No one knew anything more about the shooting.
Trio, the manager of the Box Hill apartment complex, declined to comment.
Victoria Police confirmed in a statement that they were treating the incident as a targeted attack.
Homicide detectives are continuing the investigation.
