Three luxury yachts sink in Sydney Harbour as fire rips through exclusive Mosman marina | Australia news

Three ships have sunk after a fire broke out on luxury yachts moored in Sydney Harbor marina overnight.

New South Wales police said in a statement that emergency services were called to the Spit Marina off Mosman in Sydney’s Middle Harbor at 3.30am on Friday after reports of a fire.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, emergency services found a yacht in “good condition”. 4 people on the ship were evacuated.

A woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

NSW Fire and Rescue chief Adam Dewberry told media on Friday the area would be disinfected once the fires were extinguished.

“Three of these big yachts went down,” Dewberry told Nine’s Today programme. “We’re now moving into the hazmat phase, where we’re working with the NSW Ports Authority to create explosions around to make sure we capture all that pollution.

“There is a lot of debris on the water and it is also used to collect fuel and oil, luckily these are coming to the surface. Investigations will then begin of course with fire rescue support by the police.”

Dewberry said the outcome of the fire could have been much worse.

“There are dozens of boats and yachts and a lot of money here, and people live on some of these ships. But fortunately, the interventions by firefighters and firefighters once they get there have decreased.” [the fire] closed. And the NSW port authority managed to disconnect the incoming fire truck,” Dewberry said.

“Yes, we lost three ships and the fourth was quite badly damaged, but we could have lost a lot more of these yachts there.”

Police said initial investigations have been made and the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

The marina at the Spit is one of six marinas recommended by Superyacht Australia for docking yachts of 30 meters or longer in Sydney.

The website explains that the facility offers “106 secure wet berths for vessels up to 50 metres, including dedicated superyacht moorings.” “It’s one of Sydney’s premier destinations for luxury berthing and on-water comfort.”

One northbound lane of Spit Road was closed Friday morning.
