Thrissur Corporation Budget unveils vision to transform Thrissur into ‘Oxygen City’

With an ambitious green vision at its core, the Thrissur Corporation Budget has laid out a roadmap to transform the city into an “Oxygen City” by expanding green space and prioritizing eco-friendly development. Deputy Mayor A. Prasad presented the Budget to the Council on Thursday and emphasized that sustainability, public welfare and modern urban growth are the key pillars.
Framed by Mahatma Gandhi’s development ideals and incorporating public suggestions, the Budget outlined a number of forward-looking initiatives aimed at steering the city into a sustainable and modern era. The main focus is on reducing air pollution and promoting environmentally sound urban planning.
Its flagship proposals include a plastics-to-diesel manufacturing plant along with the Oxygen Green City project, installation of floating solar panels for power generation at Valiyakulam and reuse of purified water from the water purification plant. Innovative 24-hour public service ideas, including milk ATMs, also found a place in the Budget.
The budget paid special attention to the safety and welfare of women and children, announcing free bus rides, pink toilets, menstrual cup distribution and dedicated play streets for children. Public spaces will be redesigned to be more accessible and inclusive for the elderly and disabled.
In the sports and youth sector, the construction of a synthetic track and the establishment of a start-up incubation center are planned to support young entrepreneurs. A modern slaughterhouse has also been proposed as part of infrastructure improvements.
Important infrastructure works such as overpasses, embankment roads and comprehensive road maintenance are on the agenda, and the Company is preparing to supply a pothole repair machine to improve road conditions.
In order to strengthen financial resources, the Company plans to issue municipal bonds. Mayor Niji Justin said that the Budget aims to ensure equitable development in all units, unlike previous administrations, and announced that grievance redressal adalats will be held to effectively address public grievances.
