TikTok accused of ‘union-busting’ after laying off hundreds of staff

Tiktok’s Chinese owners were accused of “bare -faced union explosion” by announcing hundreds of dismissals just a week before the staff voted for unionization.

Beijing -based hawers of the social media platform announced on Friday that hundreds of staff in the London office will be made unnecessary, their roles have been allocated to offices in Europe and that they would provide external resources to third -party providers.

It came only a week before the company’s proposal to set up a branch of the employees in the content control arm of the company, the Communication Workers Association for Personnel (CWU).

The announcement of the dismissal on Friday raised the fear that Bayta was trying to pressure the staff before the union voting.

However, on Friday morning, Tiktok announced to CWU that he had completely supported the ballot compass while the surplus consultation process took place.

Shortly after the dismissal was announced, a senior byte employee said in a letter to CWU: “Considering these exceptional conditions, we decided that we should put the planned voluntary voting process immediately.”

CWU National Officer John Chadfield Independent: “Timing is deliberate… And deliberately cruel.

“The bare -faced union burst leaves the members who are facing great uncertainty, and as far as we can see, they will give them off to a third party in Lisbon.”

The union has been working with Bayta since last November to get to know Tiktok’s London -based content moderators. “What they have to see is literally nightmares.” He added.

CWU warned hundreds of content moderators that laying will make the application more dangerous.

Although the authority says that the Bay plans to adopt some content control responsibilities, he warned that technology is not yet ready and that human moderators would be necessary.

Mr. Chadfield said that after the surplus consultation process was closed, CWU’s offer to the union would continue. “Tiktok’s union is inevitable. They may want to delay the most politely possible, but it is inevitable.” And while the government squeezed online harmful content, CWU said that byttnce’s decision to postpone hundreds of content moderators will leave Tiktok a more dangerous platform.

Tiktok said he was voluntarily busy with the union, although he didn’t have to do this.

Bayta, who announced their dismissal, said that “our operations intensifying our operations globally in less place.”

Tiktok’s British head office will open a new office in FarringDon in London and at the beginning of next year in Barbican.

For the social media company, a spokesman said: “Last year, we continue to restructure our global operating model to strengthen our global operating model for security and security, which involves intensifying our operations globally less.

Tiktok uses more and more AI to the shared moderate content in the application.

According to the platform, more than 85 percent of the content removed because it violates community guidelines is defined and transferred by automation.

He also says that AI may reduce the amount of sad or graphic content exposed to moderate teams.

Restructuring plans come shortly after the UK’s online security action implemented by OCOM came into force last month.

This requires online platforms to protect British viewers from illegal materials such as child sexual abuse and excessive pornography.

Platforms are also required to prevent children from accessing harmless and inappropriate content.

Tiktok’s security inspection teams are trained to detect signs that accounts can be used by a child and then suspend the account.

However, it can also use AI -based systems to describe information such as keywords that may indicate a potentially non -disregarding account and in -app reports from the user community.
