Tim Westwood is charged with four rapes as former Radio 1 DJ is accused of multiple sex attacks over the course of 33 years

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has been charged with sexual offenses against seven women over a 33-year period, the Metropolitan Police said today.

The 68-year-old broadcaster was accused of four rapes, nine indecent assaults and two sexual assaults between 1983 and 2016.

Westwood will appear at Westminster magistrates’ court on Monday, November 10. The alleged crimes involved women and girls as young as 17.

The first two allegations relate to the indecent assault of a 17-year-old girl in Fulham in 1983; and the indecent assault of a woman in her 20s in Vauxhall in 1986.

It was claimed that a woman aged 17-18 was raped in London between 1995 and 1996. The same woman was allegedly indecently assaulted at the same time.

Another allegation concerns allegations that another woman, aged between 17 and 18, was raped and inappropriately assaulted in London between 2000 and 2001.

Other charges relate to the rape of a woman in her 20s in London in 2010. The same year, a woman in her 20s was sexually assaulted in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

The most recent allegation, from 2016, involved the sexual assault of a woman in her 20s in the Finchley area of ​​London.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, of the Metropolitan Police, said: ‘It takes courage to come forward and report such allegations.

‘The women who did this trusted us and we continue to provide them with every support possible.

‘Our investigation remains open and we would encourage anyone affected by this case or with information to come forward and speak to us.

‘A special investigation team can be contacted by email at CIT@met.police.uk. Any reports will be treated in the strictest confidence by specialist officers.’

He said support can also be provided by contacting independent charity Rape Crisis through its 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.

Crown prosecutor Lionel Idan said: ‘The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute Tim Westwood for a number of serious sexual offences.

‘Our prosecutors determined that there was sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it was in the public interest to initiate a criminal investigation.

‘The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that the criminal case is active and the accused has the right to a fair trial.

‘It is extremely important that there is no reporting, commenting or sharing of information online that could undermine these operations in any way.’
