Briton Norris, who was 14 points behind Australian Piastri in the standings with five laps to go, edged Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to the top spot by 0.262 seconds after finishing his best.
It was the 14th pole position of his F1 career, his fifth of the season and his first since Belgium in July.
“What a lap. Even I don’t know how I did it,” Norris said on the team radio, realizing his time of one minute, 15.586 seconds was unbeatable.
“Honestly, it was an incredible tour,” he said after getting out of the vehicle. “It was one of those tours where everything came together.”
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion and chasing his first podium with the team he joined in January, will start the season in a best of third, with Mercedes’ George Russell finishing fourth.
