Cops call out teen over ‘reckless’ e-bike crash while pulling wheelie
South Australia Police (SAPOL) have released shocking footage of a young e-bike rider crashing into a car at high speed while towing a wheelchair.
Miraculously, the 16-year-old cyclist escaped with non-life-threatening injuries.
The footage was captured by an on-duty traffic officer who happened to witness the crash while responding to a minor collision on Hillier Rd at Reynella in Adelaide’s south.
The police officer saw the young man raising his front wheel in the air and shouting along the road.
Seconds later, a sickening crack is captured as the driver haplessly crashes into the side of a vehicle that had just pulled out of a nearby shopping center parking lot.
The young man then gets off his bike, flies into the air and lands about 20 meters away.
The young man, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident, was taken to hospital and treated.
He was subsequently charged with a number of offences, including speeding past an emergency vehicle, dangerous driving, driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and driving without a licence.
The e-bike was seized and the teenager will appear in youth court at a later date.
The driver of the car was also uninsured.
The shocking incident sparked a plea for safety and Inspector Shane Johnson said it proved police would not tolerate dangerous driving.
“This type of careless, irresponsible and incredibly dangerous driving is disgraceful and shows the consequences of such unacceptable behaviour,” he said.
“While this driver is incredibly lucky, you will be out of luck if you choose to take such risks on the road.
“People who choose to act so recklessly on our roads are why accidents, including fatalities, occur.
“People using such illegal e-bikes or e-motorcycles need to be aware of the risks involved and know that they are some of the most vulnerable road users with little or no protection.”
