Tjen First Indonesian to Win at Australian Open in 28 Years

What are you doing? Janice Tjen marked another milestone in her meteoric rise on Tuesday when she became the first Indonesian to win a match at the Australian Open in 28 years.

Unseeded Tjen defeated Canadian 22nd seed Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 7-6 (7/1) to advance to the second round in Melbourne and add to her growing list of scalps.

Tjen, who was ranked 413th this time last year but is now world number 59, became the first Indonesian woman to win a match at a major since Yayuk Basuki in 1998.

The 23-year-old got off to a fast start and stunned her top-ranked Canadian opponent by wrapping up the first set in 36 minutes.

Tjen quickly outpaced 2021 US Open runner-up Fernandez with an early break in the second set.

The fourth game of the second set was in danger of becoming crucial, as Tjen dug himself out of a hole on his own serve to take a 3-1 lead.

Fernandez, 23, fought back, turning the tide by winning three matches in a row.

The warring duo advanced to the tiebreak, where Tjen took a 3-0 lead and never looked back, letting out a mighty roar when the victory was confirmed.

Tjen experienced a breakthrough in 2025.

She made another surprise by defeating Russia’s 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova in the US Open qualifiers.

She became the first Indonesian to play in the main singles draw of a Grand Slam since 2004 in New York.

The Jakarta native won the title in Chennai last year, becoming the first Indonesian to win a WTA Tour singles title since 2002.
