TN Officer Supriya Sahu Wins UN’s Highest Environmental Honour
Chennai: Supriya Sahu, additional principal secretary of Tamil Nadu’s environment, climate change and forests department, was conferred with the 2025 UN Champions of the World award for inspiration and action, the United Nations’ highest environmental honour.
They were awarded the 2025 Champions of the Earth award by the UN Environment Program at an event in Nairobi on Wednesday.
Sahu is known in India for his pioneering and long-standing leadership on critical environmental challenges, including plastic and wildlife conservation, a press release said here on Wednesday.
The Champions of the Earth award celebrates individuals, groups and organizations whose actions have a transformative impact on the environment.
The 2025 award winners are at the forefront of global efforts to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature, biodiversity loss, pollution and waste, and demonstrate scalable solutions.
The statement highlighted Sahu’s latest transformative work on sustainable cooling as a model for a warming world.
Since its inception in 2005, the annual Champions of the Earth award has recognized innovators and leaders who drive transformative economic, political and social change, fight environmental injustice and defend natural resources.
