Heavy mountain snow on the way up and down the Oregon Cascades

PORTLAND, ore. (KOIN) — Sunday’s forecast in Portland calls for a few showers in the greater Portland-Vancouver area, especially during the afternoon hours.

Temperatures look set to remain slightly above average, with daytime highs peaking in the upper 40s or low 50s for the next five days around PDX.

But the big weather story here is the snow that’s expected to fall on the mountain as we wrap up the weekend and head into early next week.

Snowfall will continue across the Cascades, with heavy snow expected Sunday night. The National Weather Service issued a statement Winter Weather Advisory It will go into effect at 4 a.m. Sunday for the Southern Washington Cascades and Oregon Cascades at or above 4,000 feet and last until 4 a.m. Monday morning.

Total snow accumulation above 4,000 feet is expected to be 10 to 11 inches in a 24-hour period. People traveling through mountain passes in our area should expect to drive in winter conditions and be prepared by keeping an emergency kit in their car.

Looking ahead to next week for Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington, Monday looks set to be the rainiest day with more active weather moving into our region. Not only will we see lots of showers around the metro area, but we also expect showers and windy conditions at times on Monday.

We will continue to see some scattered showers in PDX on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with highs in the mid to upper 40s. Christmas Eve looks set to be a little cooler, with overnight lows dropping into the mid-30s into the early Friday morning.

But for now, make sure you have your rain gear and layers handy!
