Top songs, results, performances and moments as Olivia Dean, Keli Holiday, Tame Impala compete for top spot in annual countdown
Before we get stuck into last year’s hot ones, let’s consider what songs are sizzling in 2024.
The previous countdown (held in January 2025) saw US singer Chappell Roan take the top spot with his blockbuster pop song Good luck baby!. Meanwhile, Sydney pop-guitar duo Royel Otis took second place with their covers. Murder on the Dance Floor.
Grammy winner Billie Eilish and club rat queen Charli XCX dominated the overall chart with eight entries, including their duet To guessThis broke Australian act G Flip’s record last year for the most appearances by a single artist on the chart.
There was a second countdown last year. This was held in July to celebrate the youth station’s 50th anniversary, and only home-grown tracks were recognised, rather than music from around the world. This follows a backlash to a decline in the number of local artists featured in the annual survey in previous years.

But there was a notable lack of female representation overall. Of course, The Veronicas and Missy Higgins were in the top five, but only 12 tracks throughout the countdown were performed by or featured female artists.
