Tory shadow minister praises Trump’s illegal immigration crackdown – and says it could work in UK

Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration to the US at the Mexican border has been praised by shadow home secretary Chris Philp, who said the measures could work in the UK.
Mr. Trump, who has undertaken a major overhaul of the U.S. immigration system, has moved to block asylum seekers from entering the country and strengthened the Mexican border, as well as expanding the semi-militarized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to target undocumented immigrants.
Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, unveiled her immigration plan at her party’s Conservative Party conference in October, which includes a plan to leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and ban asylum claims for new illegal immigrants.
under it Border PlanThe Conservative Party will also introduce a “removal force” modeled on ICE, which has been criticized for alleged heavy-handed tactics, the party said.
To talk IndependentMr Philp said: “We will exit the ECHR, which will allow us to deport all illegal immigrants within a week of their arrival and deport 150,000 people a year without the right to be here.
“We will double the budget to £1.6 billion to remove people from this country illegally. We think that’s what the public expects, they expect our immigration laws to be implemented properly.”
In August Mr Philp and shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick met US vice-president JD Vance during his holiday in the Cotswolds; Among the topics discussed was the issue of immigration.
Mr Philp said the Trump administration’s policy of immediately removing people who entered the country illegally without seeking asylum was also part of the Conservative Party’s government plan, but did not compare its “return power” to ICE.
He said: “By removing people who have no right to be in the United States, the U.S. administration has reduced illegal entry across the Mexican border by 80 to 90 percent in just a few months, which shows that these policies are working, and within a week we want to remove people who are coming illegally and we want to deport anyone who is here illegally in the country and all foreign criminals.
“But to do that we need to leave the ECHR and the Conservatives are the only party with a credible, detailed plan to do that.”
He added: “Without the ECHR allowing modern slavery claims and excluding asylum claims from people who enter the country illegally, they will essentially have no legal basis to challenge deportation and will be sent back to their country of origin if it is safe or possible, or if not possible they will be sent to a safe third country such as Rwanda.”
Under the Conservative Party’s “return power” plan, authorities would work closely with the police, who would also be required to carry out immigration checks on every person stopped or arrested. Ms Badenoch said 150,000 people would be deported a year.
Despite the Tory campaign tying the force to ICE, Mr Philp was determined not to link the two when asked about it. Independent. But he said he would work across the country with a mandate to remove people who are in the UK illegally.
Additionally, the Conservatives said, as part of the border plan, refugee status could only be granted to immigrants threatened by a foreign government, and those fleeing conflict or religious or sexuality laws would not be eligible.
After leaving the ECHR, immigration courts will be abolished and all decisions regarding immigration will be taken by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In an environment where a record number of asylum requests arrived last year and the number of asylum seekers housed in Home Office hotels increased, the Labor Party announced its own overhaul of the asylum system.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the government will change the way the ECHR is interpreted by UK judges in a bid to prevent asylum seekers from exercising their right to family life to avoid deportation. Refugee status would become temporary and subject to regular reviews under Ms Mahmood’s plan.
