Tottenham: ‘Clean sheet mentality’ – pragmatism proving key for Thomas Frank

Leaving the opposition behind was the mentality in Tottenham last season, but now the focus is to protect the targets at the other end of the field.

On Tuesday, the Spurs Champions League opener against Villarreal’a 1-0 victory, this season under the direction of Thomas Frank in five matches were the fourth clean page.

On the other hand, they kept only one at the same stage of last season, when the more aggressive Age Postcoglou was responsible.

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall told Amazon Prime, “This year we talked a lot about ‘clean page mentality’ because we accepted a lot last year.”

“Them [Villarreal] I didn’t have a chance on the target, so we did a really good job. “

Defender Micky Van added vein: “I think we are a difficult team to play against. Absolutely. We stand really good in terms of structure, and we all know what to do, so we are a difficult team to beat.”

The style of Frank’s Tottenham side against Villarreal, unlike football played under the postercoglou.

Thanks to Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior’s Calamitous error, they are much more cautious even after a fourth -minute opener was given.

However, their defenses were perfect, Van de Ven, especially Villarreal, stopped most of the attacks.

Although visitors had 10 shots, Guglielmo Vicario did not have a savings from start to finish.

The price of this pragmatism was that Tottenham only made a shot on the target – very little for the excitement of house fans.

“We really defended it well, and we gave very little to the game against a really good Villarreal side.” He said.

“I don’t think we didn’t reach the highest level. There was definitely a spell we had a second half, let’s give it to the Villarreal men and then we’ll come back, it’s a fun thing.

“It was a very equal game we just wrapped.”
