In the UK, account holders are constantly encouraged to change which bank they are at in exchange for a cash bonus. Latest figures showed Nationwide gave more than 40,000 members £175 for joining in just two months.

Current account switches surpassed one million for the third year in a row, following an increase in the number of customers looking for better deals as 2025 approaches. It gained 41,450 new account holders across the country between July and September, with savers attracted by £175 rewards and annual payments through the profit-sharing scheme.

According to the Current Account Switching Service (CASS), there were 350,114 current account switches in the last quarter of 2025. But some have transferred their funds outside of CASS, meaning the real figure is likely higher. There were 1.54 million crossings throughout the year.

However, this represented a decrease compared to totals in 2023 and 2024. This was a period when high interest rates drove up savings rates.

The country isn’t the only bank offering Brits cash for transit.

It comes as Nationwide says it will allow mortgage deeds to be signed electronically without the need for a witness, as part of moves to help speed up the home-buying process and remove some inconvenience.

The change means people buying a property or looking to remortgage from Nationwide will be able to sign mortgage contracts electronically if their solicitor or conveyancer is set up to use qualified electronic signature (QES) technology.

Nationwide’s initiative only applies to homes in England and Wales.

A mortgage note is a legal document connecting a person’s mortgage to their property and traditionally requires a physical signature on paper.

However, Nationwide will now allow the use of QES, a secure form of authenticated electronic signature, following the Land Registry’s decision last year to begin accepting it as part of the mortgage application process.
