Trump wants to turn Alcatraz into a ‘State-of-the-Art’ Prison: Here’s why it’s so famous

In a stunning budget proposal, President Donald Trump requested $152 million to transform the former Alcatraz prison into a secure correctional facility that the White House called “state-of-the-art.” The historic island prison, closed for more than six decades, could once again become a symbol of maximum security incarceration if Congress approves funding.

The request was included in the White House’s proposed budget for fiscal 2027 and is intended to cover the first year of rebuilding costs. Although the proposal outlines the administration’s priorities, Congress will ultimately decide whether to move forward with the plan, according to a report by Sky News.

The White House’s fiscal year 2027 budget proposal includes a major request for one of America’s most iconic prison sites.

Why does Trump want to reopen Alcatraz?

President Donald Trump has requested $152 million to begin reopening Alcatraz as a “state-of-the-art, secure prison facility.” Under the proposal, the Federal Bureau of Prisons would use the money to cover reconstruction costs in the first year.
Last May, Trump wrote that he was directing the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice and other agencies to “reopen the greatly expanded and rebuilt Alcatraz to house America’s most brutal and violent criminals.” He also added that the place “will serve as a symbol of law, order and justice.” He said the country was “overrun by malicious, violent and habitual criminals who are the remnants of society.”

What makes Alcatraz so famous?

Located on an island in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz operated as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963. Its remote location, freezing waters and strong currents have made it one of the safest prisons in the country.

Authorities argued for a long time that escape was impossible. According to the FBI, 36 inmates attempted to escape in 14 separate incidents during its 29 years of operation. Although no escapes are officially recorded as successful, five prisoners are stated to be “missing and presumed drowned.”

The prison housed many notorious inmates, including Al Capone, George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly and James ‘Whitey’ Bulger.

His legacy also lives on in popular culture with films such as Escape From Alcatraz and The Rock.

Will the plan actually go forward?

Today, Alcatraz is no longer a prison. It has been managed by the National Park Service since 1973 and has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States, according to a Sky News report.

More than 1.2 million people visit the island every year. Still, the president’s budget proposal has no legal validity. As lawmakers craft federal spending bills, it serves as a road map for Congress, which can approve, reject or amend the request.
