Iran shoots down US Air Force A-10 Warthog in a firefight during fighter jet rescue mission

A US Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II was shot down while trying to rescue the crew from a crashed F-15 Strike Eagle fighter jet in Iran. According to US officials, the pilot ejected safely to friendly territory and was not harmed. The A-10, known as the Warthog, has been in service since 1977… but the Air Force is pushing to remove it from service, considering the aircraft obsolete.
