UK snow maps show blizzards hitting England and Scotland | Weather | News

The UK could see the impact of cold and snowy weather within a few days as a cold wave moves across the country from the west. Weather maps created by WXCharts show that snow began falling along the country’s northwest coast in the early morning hours of December 12. Scotland and Northern Ireland will be the first to be hit by the barrage of wintry weather, with up to 2mm of snow falling per hour in Ayrshire and Londonderry by around 6am.
Parts of the Northern England coastline could also see snow as early as December 12, while a band of rain moves down into Cumberland and North Yorkshire at similar times. Seasonal weather is expected to intensify in certain areas at midday, with depths of up to 5cm expected to accumulate in northern Scotland and parts of England stretching from Newcastle to Blackpool.
Rain is also expected to spread across northern England, with wet weather from the Lancashire coast to West Durham and Yorkshire.
Over the same period, the mercury is expected to fall in some parts of the country, dropping below 0°C in Wales and the West of England, and hovering just above freezing elsewhere.
The snowfall, which will fall across nine counties in the UK, follows a wet start to the meteorological winter following a wet and mild autumn with temperatures slightly above average.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast for December 8 to December 17 predicts “unstable conditions will continue” with “rain and strong winds” expected in the north-east and average temperatures that will feel cooler in wind and rain.
