Junior Perth doctor Christian Joseph charged with manslaughter after man found dead in Fremantle
A junior doctor is behind bars for manslaughter after he was subjected to an alleged strangulation that caused his death after chasing a man he saw peering through a window, a court heard.
Christian Jack Joseph, 26, is accused of murdering a 63-year-old man who was found unresponsive on a Fremantle street in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He was refused bail in the Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday; He appeared there in a blue forensic overall the day after emergency services went to South Terrace, where the man was found unresponsive at around 2.05am.
The 63-year-old man died later at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Police detained two people in their 20s at the scene.
Homicide detectives later charged Dr Joseph, of Crawley, with one count of manslaughter.
Dr., who works as an assistant doctor at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, told the court. Joseph was said to have been drinking with friends at several venues in Fremantle.
He and a friend were returning to an address in South Terrace when they spotted the 63-year-old standing on the border fence and looking through a small window.
The court heard the pair shouted at the fleeing man before allegedly chasing him down and knocking him to the ground.
Dr Joseph then allegedly pinned the man in a suffocating position from behind for approximately one minute and 50 seconds.
As soon as he realized the man had lost consciousness, Dr. Joseph reportedly began performing CPR and told his friend to call Triple-0.
Prosecutors said the incident was recorded on CCTV.
He was refused bail and remanded in custody until 5 August.
