Amazon’s global workforce reduction plans

On Tuesday, Amazon’s senior vice president of human experience and technology, Beth Galetti, announced 14,000 layoffs, months after CEO Andy Jassy warned that artificial intelligence would reduce the company’s workforce.

In June, CEO Jassy stated that Amazon plans to reduce its workforce due to the increasing use of artificial intelligence to finish jobs usually done by humans.

“The reductions we’re sharing today are a continuation of that work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets,” Galetti said in a blog post Tuesday.

Amazon’s confirmation comes as reports emerged that the e-commerce giant could cut nearly 30,000 jobs; That would mark the largest layoff since late 2022, when it began eliminating nearly 27,000 positions.

Are more layoffs likely?

Galetti signaled more layoffs, noting Amazon’s hiring plans in key areas in 2026.

“As Andy mentioned earlier this year, as we look to 2026, we expect to continue hiring in key strategic areas while also finding additional places where we can remove layers, increase ownership and achieve efficiency gains,” Galetti said.

Highlighting the reason for the layoffs, he said, “Some may ask why we are reducing roles when the company is performing well. What we need to remember is that the world is changing rapidly. This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we have seen since the internet, allowing companies to innovate much faster than ever before.”

What should affected employees expect?

Galetti assured that the company “offers most employees 90 days (timing may vary based on local laws) to search for a new role within the company, and hiring teams will prioritize internal candidates to help as many people as possible find new roles at Amazon.”

“We will offer transition support including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits and more to teammates who are unable or choose not to find a new role at Amazon,” he added.
