Tributes to former Nottingham Forest academy player, 14, fatally struck by train

Tributes have poured in for a 14-year-old boy with “incredible life energy” who died after being hit by a train on Wednesday night.

British Transport Police (BTP) said Joshua Travis, who played as a goalkeeper at Nottingham Forest academy, died at the scene after being hit by a train in Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire.

His death is not being treated as suspicious by authorities and the Rail Accidents Investigation Branch (RAIB) is launching a “preliminary investigation” into his death.

“Josh was a boy with incredible vitality, an infectious and mischievous smile, kind, bright eyes and a love of giving,” his family said in a statement to British Transport Police.

“He leaves a void in our lives that is impossible to fill and always will be, and we will miss him forever.”

Dozens of floral gifts were left at the scene of Joshua’s death by young people, and the Chestnut Grove crossing was closed for the first 21 days.

Nottingham Forest FC also paid tribute to the teenager with a post on social media.

“Everyone [the club] The Premier League club expressed its deep sorrow to learn of the tragic death of our former academy goalkeeper Josh Travis.

“Our thoughts are with Josh’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

He also played for Gedling-based youth club Aspire FC, describing himself as “a great goalkeeper and a great character in the group”.

The club added on Facebook: “Everyone who came across Josh described him as someone who was a pleasure to be around with a kind and fun nature.

“Josh has made a real impact in his age group, both as a footballer and more importantly as a person, and he will be greatly missed at the club.”

It was stated that the club postponed all matches this week to respect Joshua and his family.

Burton Joyce FC said it would observe a minute’s silence in his memory and added on Facebook:

“The Travis family have been a huge part of our club for many years and our hearts go out to them during this unimaginable time.

“Rest in peace Josh, you will always be a part of our BJFC family.”

Announcing the crossing will be closed for 21 days, Network Rail’s route director for the East Midlands, Mark Budden, said: “Our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends affected by this tragic incident.

“Safety is our top priority and we fully support the Rail Accidents Investigation Branch (RAIB) as part of ongoing investigations.”
