Just because the last two Tests of the Ashes series have died again doesn’t mean they aren’t full of life, weight and meaning. No Ash Test can be completely, indisputably and documentably dead.

To begin with, these Tests this time are Australia’s common cause. In the somber aftermath of the Bondi Beach massacre, the adjective most often heard about the country is the word “divided”. Cricket cannot be a panacea, but it can and does bring people together for a greater purpose than themselves. It’s a trivial goal in the scheme of things, but it’s shared nonetheless. Who knows, can it even drown out the screams of politicians?
