The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted a two-day stay on a federal judge’s decision that the Trump administration must pay full SNAP benefits for November.
The delay will give Congress time to pass a short-term funding bill that would reopen the U.S. government, which has been closed since Oct. 1, and fund the SNAP program, which provides food stamps to 42 million Americans.
The Trump administration, in a filing submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday, suggested that the dispute over the decision to pay these benefits in full could be discussed soon when Congress passes the bill this week. The House of Representatives is expected to begin voting on the bill approved by the Senate on Wednesday afternoon.
In an order, the Supreme Court said the administration’s application for a longer stay of the decision during the appeal phase was referred to the full court for consideration.
The brief stay, granted by Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s order on Friday, was extended until 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, the court said.
Tuesday’s court decision stated that Jackson said he would “deny the request for an extension of the administrative stay and deny the application.”
