Pvt. The closure of universities enters its 3rd day
Hyderabad: The indefinite closure of private colleges across Telangana entered its third day on Wednesday despite educational institutions being closed; Federation of Associations of Telangana Higher Institutions (FATHI) and students’ unions have vowed to continue the agitation until at least half of the Rs 10,000 crore fee refund dues and scholarships are released.
FATHI members, at a press conference, unveiled the posters of the ‘Telangana Teachers Consensus Meeting’ scheduled at LB Stadium on November 8, which is expected to see one lakh teachers and non-teaching staff from all 33 districts. The Federation also announced a “Maha Student Rally” on 11 November, where thousands of students were expected to march towards the Secretariat if their demands were not met.
FATHI president N. Ramesh Babu said the government’s repeated assurances have not translated into action. “Only 300 billion of the 1,200 billion announced earlier have been released. Colleges are on the verge of collapse. Staff salaries have not been paid and students cannot access their certificates,” he said. He added that the BPharmacy regular and supplementary exams scheduled by JNTU Hyderabad will be boycotted until further notice and urged the university to postpone these exams.
The federation accused the education department’s in-charge secretary, A. Devasena, of “misleading” senior officials on higher education issues and sought his transfer. He also called on the Secretary-General to include banking and financial experts rather than bureaucrats in the newly proposed council.
Meanwhile, BC Welfare Association president and MP R. Krishnayya harshly criticized the government for creating committees instead of releasing funds. “14 lakh BC, SC and ST students are directly affected. The state collects salaries of legislators immediately but keeps students waiting for years,” he said. Krishnayya demanded that the newly constituted coordination committee submit its report within one month instead of three and that the government clear all its debts by March.
Semester exams and academic programs are not continuing as nearly 1,500 vocational and degree colleges are closed across the state.
