US President Donald Trump gave a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, questioning NATO’s commitment to defending the US and accusing the alliance of treating Washington “very unfairly”. He said the US would always defend NATO allies but was unsure whether they would reciprocate, reiterating that Europe must take primary responsibility for the Ukraine war.

US President Trump questioned NATO’s commitment to defending the US, asking whether the transatlantic alliance “will be on our side”.

“The problem with NATO is that we are on their side 100 percent,” Trump said. “But I’m not sure they’ll be there for us.”

Trump has increasingly questioned the credibility of the alliance over his push to claim Greenland and objections from European allies to the US seizure of Danish territory.

Trump criticized Canadian Prime Minister

During his speech, Trump also criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for his remarks at the World Economic Forum (WEF) and said that the country should be more “grateful” towards the United States. Trump said his northern neighbor “received a lot of free gifts” from Washington and noted that he was not as grateful as he should have been.

“By the way, Canada is getting a lot of freebies from us. They should be grateful too, but they’re not. I saw your Prime Minister yesterday; he wasn’t that grateful. They should be grateful to us.” Trump said, adding that the plan to build the “Golden Dome” missile defense system would also provide protection to Canada.

“Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that next time you make a statement, Mark,” Trump said.

Trump reiterates claim of mediating India-Pakistan conflict

US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he plays a mediating role in many international conflicts, including those between India and Pakistan. Speaking at the 56th Annual World Economic Forum (WEF) Summit in Davos, Trump touched on the escalation following India’s Operation Sindoor (precision strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians on April 22) in May 2025.

Trump also stated that he worked to end the Russia-Ukraine war over the past year and claimed that he helped resolve the long-standing dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Trump on India-US trade deal

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed optimism about the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), saying the two countries “will reach a good agreement” while describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a close friend and a highly respected leader. He made these remarks in an interaction with Moneycontrol after his speech at the 56th World Economic Forum Summit.

“I have great respect for your Prime Minister. He’s a great man and my friend, and we’ll make a good deal,” Trump said.

Trump distances US from Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump downplayed Washington’s role in the Ukraine war in his speech in Davos.

Trump repeated his claim that if he had been president at that time, there would have been no war. He also repeated his claim that the 2020 US election was “rigged”.

Questioning what the United States has gained from its efforts to end the war, Trump asked what his country has gained “other than death, destruction, and huge amounts of cash going to people who don’t appreciate what we’ve done.”

“I’m talking about NATO, I’m talking about Europe. They need to work on Ukraine. We don’t. The United States is too far away. There’s a big, beautiful ocean separating us. We have nothing to do with that,” he said.
