Trump confirms bombings; Nicolas Maduro, wife in US custody

Members of the US Congress and Senate have responded to the Trump administration’s attack on Venezuela, condemning the president for “illegal” attacks and claiming that he carried out the operation without consulting or authorizing Congress.

Republican Congressman Jim McGovern wrote about X:”Without authorization from Congress and because the vast majority of Americans oppose military action, Trump launched an unjust, illegal attack on Venezuela.”

congressman Melanie Stansbury wrote: “The White House tonight confirms U.S. military operations in Venezuela. Let’s be clear: these attacks are illegal. The president has no authority to declare war or conduct large-scale military operations without Congress. Congress must act immediately to rein him in. Immediately.”

Ruben Gallego, Iraq War veteran and senator from Arizona said in a post on X that no matter the outcome, the United States will be held morally responsible for waging an “unjust” war.

He wrote: “I fought in some of the toughest battles of the Iraq war. I saw my brothers die, I saw civilians caught in the crossfire, all in the name of an unjust war. Whatever the outcome, we were wrong to start this war in Venezuela.”
