Thanksgiving dinner cost: Will your Thanksgiving dinner be cheaper this year? Here’s what reports and surveys say

Families going Thanksgiving shopping this year can find some relief at the checkout. Türkiye prices have fallen sharply, helping to ease the cost of the classic holiday spread. While not everything is cheaper, overall dining is expected to cost less than last year.

Thanksgiving shoppers may be in for a pleasant surprise this year as the cost of a classic holiday meal is trending downward. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual survey, a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people will average $55.18, down 5% from last year. This is a noticeable shift in a time when grocery bills are often unpredictable, USA Today reports.

Why are Thanksgiving costs dropping this year?

The biggest factor behind the decrease in the total is Türkiye. Prices for traditional ornaments are down 16% from last year, making it the most significant cost reduction of the entire meal. Overall Thanksgiving costs have decreased every year since 2022, when the total hit a record high of $64.05, USA Today reports.

How much will it cost Türkiye in 2025?

Volunteer shoppers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico used the same shopping list the federation has used since 1986. This list includes turkey, cubed stuffing, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, frozen peas, fresh cranberries, celery, carrots, pumpkin pie mix, crusts, whipped cream and whole milk.
Only four items dropped in price this year: the turkey itself, cubed stuffing, dinner rolls and fresh cranberries. The price of a 16-pound turkey will drop from $25.67 to $21.50 in 2024, marking the smallest share of the overall Thanksgiving bill since 2000, USA Today reports.

Which appetizers have seen a price increase?

Pumpkin pie ingredients have remained constant, but many other staples have increased. While there was an increase in sweet potatoes, frozen peas, carrots, celery, whole milk and whipped cream, the sharpest jump was in fresh vegetables. The agricultural bureau points out that increasing costs of fertilizer, fuel, machinery, labor and land are the main pressure factors.

The impact of last fall’s Hurricane Helene also played a role, especially in North Carolina, where nearly half of the nation’s sweet potatoes grow, according to a report by USA Today.
