Trump Drops Whopper In Rant To Reporters As He Heads For Mar-a-Lago

Minister Donald Trump When he landed in Florida for a weekend at Mar-a-Lago, he told reporters a big lie.

Trump walked up to cameras on the tarmac to address reporters without taking questions Friday afternoon. He launched into a tirade in which he tried to blame Democrats for the government shutdown:

MAYOR DONALD: So the shutdown continues. The Republican Party will not pay one and a half trillion dollars to illegal immigrants coming into our country.

They come for many reasons; They come from prisons, from prisons, from everywhere, from Venezuela, from many countries. We will not do this.

So the closure continues. This is a Democratic shutdown. This is Schumer’s turn off because her career has failed and is over.

But CNN daniel daleamong others, refuted Explaining where the $1.5 trillion claim comes from:

Leaving aside the subjective but dubious claim that Democrats are trying to destroy the health care of others — Democrats are proposing a reversal of Trump-approved cuts to Medicaid and other health care programs and an extension of pandemic-era Obamacare subsidies that are scheduled to expire at the end of the year — they are not proposing spending $1.5 trillion on undocumented immigrants. Undocumented people are not eligible for Obamacare subsidies or federal Medicaid coverage (hospitals are required to provide emergency care to people regardless of immigration status or ability to pay).

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a fiscal watchdog group, estimated that the spending proposal Democrats released in September would add $1.5 trillion to the debt over the next decade. But this figure is not specifically related to undocumented people. And the White House itself has claimed that Democrats are proposing to spend about $193 billion on health care for “illegal immigrants and other noncitizens,” far less than Trump’s “$1.5 trillion,” our emphasis. The White House has released a detailed list that makes clear that, even by its own controversial calculations, the majority of this small sum would be for “other noncitizens” who are lawfully in the United States.
