Trump hikes tariff on Canada to 35pc, citing fentanyl

President Donald Trump increased the tariff rate in US imports from 25 percent to 35 percent from Canada and was valid on Friday.

The White House said in a statement late on Thursday, Canada, “smugglers, merchants, criminals and illegal drugs in general to arrest, seize, detain or take over in another way,” he said.

Trump seized Canada for months and claimed that it should be a 51th US state.

If any agreement could not be reached until Friday, he threatened to apply a higher tariff to Canada.

In the early hours of Thursday, the president announced that Canada would recognize that a Palestinian state will “make it very difficult to reach a trade agreement with the northern neighbor of the United States.

Trump also expressed his disappointment with a trade deficit that greatly reflects Canada and America’s oil purchases.

Prime Minister Mark Carney alleviated the expectations of the tariffs by saying that Otawa would accept an agreement only on the table if there is one who is for the benefit of the Canadians ”.

In a statement published early on Friday, Trump was disappointed by his actions and promised to diversify Canada’s exports.

“Canada constitutes only one percent of fentanyl imports and works intensively to further reduce these volumes,” he said.

Carney said that some industries, including timber, steel, aluminum and motor vehicles, will be more difficult, but the government will try to minimize the impact and protect Canada business.

Canada was not included in Trump’s updated tariff rates list in other countries announced late on Thursday.

These import duties are expected to enter into force on 7 August.

A few weeks ago, Trump sent a letter to Canada and planned to increase the duties of many goods imported from Canada to 35 percent, and deepened the crack between the two North American countries, which weakened their decimal -year alliances.

Some imports from Canada are still protected by 2020 USMCA, which is about to be re-negotiated in 2026, the United States-United States-United States or USMCA.

The statement of the White House, said that the goods with Canada, which are not within the scope of USMCA, will be subject to 40 percent tariff rate.
