Trump immigration crackdown forces DC restaurants to lose workers: report

Restaurants in Washington, D.C. appear to be taking a hit in their workforce due to the Trump administration’s enforcement efforts against immigrants in the area.
Washington Post published a report On Monday, letters from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), were sent to multiple D.C. agencies in the area regarding the legal status of their employees.
According to the letter, business owners have 10 days to respond and notify HSI that the employee has been terminated or resigned or provide updated paperwork regarding the employee’s legal status. Failure to meet these qualifications can lead to fines of up to $5,724 per person for first offenses.

As a result, some restaurants reported losing dozens of employees, from waiters to managers, as they tried to fill the gaps.
The Metropolitan Washington Restaurant Association warned the Washington Post that D.C.’s “restaurant industry will be at an inflection point” if the Trump administration does not address this problem.
“From eateries run by local celebrity chefs to neighborhood culinary gems, many of the area’s most famous restaurants were founded by immigrants and first-generation Americans who have enriched and continue to enrich the area’s culinary scene and economy,” the association said in a statement. he said.

The statement continued: “As federal immigration policy continues to evolve, many restaurant workers and owners are now facing challenges that impact both individual businesses and the broader dining ecosystem. These changes impact everything from day-to-day operations to the diversity that defines our region’s restaurant industry. The restaurant industry needs predictable policies that allow for proper business planning and treat every member of society with dignity.”
Immigration attorney Becki Young, whose firm represents three D.C. restaurants, added that these letters will likely continue to be sent and that “everyone can expect to get one eventually.”
“When these workers leave, it’s not like U.S. workers are lining up to take these jobs,” Young said. “So this is an existential threat to a lot of these restaurants.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Metropolitan Washington Restaurant Association and DHS for comment.
DHS confirmed to the Washington Post that investigations are ongoing and emphasized that hiring illegal immigrants “encourages dangerous and illegal practices.”
